The impulse for this work comes from a handwritten note by my daughter when she was a young five year old. The assemblage also weaves in my own mother’s anguish, having recently lost my younger sister to cancer. Some of the laces used in the work have been passed down to me by my mother while a few others come from my sister’s family home in Goa. A stained and embroidered pocket from one of my sister’s childhood dresses preserved by my mother is at the heart of this piece. The many layers of the personal intersect with one another in a universal whole. If only we could repair the wounded hearts (hurt) by simply binding them up with a handkerchief.
