Sarla Thakral

In 1936, a young woman dressed in a saree, slipped into the cockpit of a Gypsy Moth, and flew solo. The first woman to earn a piloting A licence and fly solo, Sarla Thakral was widowed young. So she went back to college to study fine arts, and did something else that was rare in those early post-Independence years. She remarried. And then crafted a career in design. Ms Thakral soared high, not just in an airplane but out of it too.

Made of pure cotton, our Sarla Bommai can be dry-cleaned or wiped clean with a damp cloth and is instantly recognisable by her handcrocheted vintage pilot’s helmet and aviator goggles. Her soft cotton saree is trimmed with lace and is washable, along with the delicately sprigged cotton Peter Pan collar blouse.

The Sarla Bommai comes to you in a vintage aircraft made in cotton and lightly padded in foam, making it easy to pack flat for travel. Because what sort of aircraft doesn’t travel well?

Note: We use end of bolt fabric, the clothes of the dolls come in assorted colours and it may be different from the picture.
