Narakasura's Destiny
Narakasura’s Destiny
Narakasura is the first born of Mother Earth and Varaha, the Boar Avatar. His piety, penance and prayers was granted a boon of immortality, with the caveat that death could only come at the hands of his mother.
Upon receiving this largesse from the gods, he set about abusing it with impunity. From a life of Dharma he embraced his dark side. His hubris wreaked havoc and mayhem among all, including the abduction of 16,100 women.
On hearing the collective prayers of his victims over generations, imploring a cessation of mindless pain and torment, his Goddess mother reincarnated and became the consort of a God. The couple embarked on a journey to his impregnable kingdom, where she killed him. Her husband “married” the 16,100 maidens to save them from the stigma of society.
The ritual of burning an effigy
We collectively and painstakingly build an effigy representing our baser nature, attitudes and actions. On an appointed lunar day and time, an evolution is brought about through a spectacle of sound, flame, music, dance and what remains is ashes and a skeletal frame.
This purging is a symbolic annihilation in a continuous attempt to reach a place of the dissolution of the Ego.
Both depravity and virtue as witnessed in others, bear lessons for all humans to better themselves.
