An annual ritual in the Jagannath Temple of Puri, Odisha, has given rise to ‘Patachitras’. The style can be traced back to the 8th century. Each year, the painted wooden images of Jagannath, Balaram, and Shubhadra are ritually bathed and repainted. During this period, the idols are substituted by paintings or ‘Chitra’, depicting the holy trio on ‘patas’ or cloth prepared by the temple painters. This tradition has given rise to a whole new regional school. Natural colours derived from crushed stones and vegetables are used in Patachitras.

These folk, tribal, and miniature art Puzzles will challenge children and engage adults. Seeing the stunning image emerge bit by bit can be thrilling. When completed the picture is ready to be framed.
