Green fields smeared with sweat-clad corpses,
The vibrant, jubilant, enchanting deity of our lives,
As water submerges the paddy fields—
A saga of survival, ever and again.
The economy overpowered by the overlords,
Daily gains and losses calculated with grim resolve.
The cultivator and family scream:
Starved, disturbed, perturbed, sad, and weary.
One prayer echoes through the land:
To fortify the earthly gold.
Slowly merging into the procession of Kheri queens,
The ultimate deity of our lives—
A day in the Pothar and Kheri-queen’s immersion.
The Kheri Queen serves as a profound artistic metaphor crafted by the artist to encapsulate the role of scarecrows in safeguarding paddy fields. The term "Kheri" translates to "rice straw" in Assamese, symbolizing the humble yet vital materials used in agriculture, and drawing an analogy to mannequins as well.
In the artist’s imagination, the Kheri Queen embodies both a protector and a metaphor for the enduring spirit of the cultivators. Through this ritualistic creation, they transform their anxiety into a visual and ceremonial assertion of strength and perseverance, aimed at protecting the precious earthly gold—the rice—during the flooded season.
