Vintage Wooden Devadasi in Polychrome
A finely carved Devadasi in wood from Andhra Pradesh in India. Devadasis were women that were married to the chief deity of the temple. Literally meaning "servants of God", they were temple dancers and musicians. From the early period, their role in society and religious ritual was well defined and this custom prevailed all over India, but with greater rigour in south India, till as late as the beginning of the 20th century.
